Eve: The Awakening – Book Review

This will probably be my last review for a while. I’m starting a new job on Tuesday (in hopes that I can use that money to edit, get a cover design, and publish my book!!), so I won’t have as much leisure time to read. I still intend to read 100 books this year. We will see. 🙂

Jenna Moreci is a super awesome person and writer. She’s funny and gives fantastic writing advice on YouTube. You can watch her videos here and you can read the first three chapters of Eve: The Awakening here.

Eve: The Awakening
Jenna Moreci

Synopsis: (Taken from amazon.com) “Eve is an outcast. A chimera. After years of abuse and rejection, 19-year-old Evelyn Kingston is ready for a fresh start in a new city, where no one knows her name. The esteemed Billington University in Southern California seems like the perfect place to reinvent herself—to live the life of an ordinary human. But things at Billington aren’t as they seem. In a school filled with prodigies, socialites, and the leaders of tomorrow, Eve finds that the complex social hierarchy makes passing as a human much harder than she had anticipated. Even worse, Billington is harboring a secret of its own: Interlopers have infiltrated the university, and their sinister plans are targeted at chimeras—like Eve. Instantly, Eve’s new life takes a drastic turn. In a time filled with chaos, is the world focusing on the wrong enemy? And when the situation at Billington shifts from hostile to dangerous, will Eve remain in the shadows, or rise up and fight?”

This book is AWESOME! It is a long one (500 some pages), but it is full of exciting characters, scary aliens, interesting social interactions, and twists and turns.

Eve is a great heroine. She starts off as a badass and just continues down the road of badassness, even when stuff is hitting the fan. She can fight and take care of herself. Her friends are great. I don’t want to spoil, but I think Sancho is my favorite character. Ever. Go read the book and let me know if you agree.

I’ve read some reviews that complain about some of the characters being too sterotypical and cliche. I don’t agree. While I see some of them falling into sterotypes, Jenna Moreci is able to weave in character development that creates depth to even some of the side characters. I found every character I was introduced to compelling.

Fight scenes – if you love fight scenes, this is the book for you! Between combat training and alien fights that seem impossible, you will be i in your glory. The scenes are so well choreographed, I felt like I was watching a movie.

The love interest subplot is great. It grows over time and there is no “insta love” feeling anywhere. I enjoyed seeing a different side of Eve once she became more vulnerable and let her guard down a bit.

Overall, I love this book. I think it’s memorable and unpredictable. I love how descriptive and movie-like the scenes are. Character development is fantastic. If you’re into scifi, this is a must read.

I think this will be my last blog post of the weekend. I start my new job Tuesday, so wish me luck! I hope you have a fun filled 4th of July and I will talk to you soon!
