Jessica’s Early Writing (1)

Hi everyone!

Unfortunately, it’s Monday. I hope you had a great weekend. A couple weeks ago, I went to my dad’s house to help him clean out some stuff in his basement and I came across some really old journals and school projects. I thought it would be fun to share some of it with you guys. I have a few different things to share, so I will try to post something different once a week until I run out. This journal is from 1997. Enjoy 😊

I’m sad to say, my drawing skills have not improved.

I really enjoyed writing about my cats and dog.

I liked math and gym. That changed, haha.

This picture is an accurate representation of me roller skating. (Note: the stick figure that fell on her back.)

I still think the library is “nete.”

I laughed so hard reading this one.

These last two were together. I loved writing stories.

I hope you find this entertaining. I had a lot of fun going through stuff and I’m looking forward to sharing more. If you’ve ever shared old writing or school assignments, let me know. I hope your Monday flies by. 😊

Alter Reach Character Profile: Zeke

Hi everyone!

Happy Saturday. I have a super busy day planned out. I’m going wedding dress shopping with one of my best friends, her sister (one of my other best friends), and her mother (my second mother). I’ve known her family for what feels like my entire life and I can’t wait to spend the day with them. 😁

I’m having a ton of fun with these character profiles. I hope you are too. Today, I’m introducing the main villain of Alter Reach, Zeke.

Name: Zeke

Gender: Male

Age: 22

Background: When Zeke was a teenager, he was a relatively normal person, albeit a bit spoiled. His family was the richest and most powerful family of Alter Reach, but Zeke was able to keep that mostly to himself and make friends with the other kids. Something changed the day his father died. He has lost his mother at an earlier age, but losing his father sent him over the edge. He became obsessed with the old stories of a power so great, the person yielding it could have whatever they want. The thirst for that power turned him into the monster he is today.

Appearance: Black hair, dark (almost black) threatening eyes, pale, muscular.

Family: His mother and father are both dead and he has no other living blood relatives.

Friends: Zeke doesn’t really have friends, just followers. Jade is probably his closest friend.

Romance: Zeke and Jade are together, but I wouldn’t call it romantic.

Introvert or extrovert? Extrovert.

Strengths: Strong, resilient, smart

Weaknesses: Zeke is a spoiled brat who happens to be powerful. Unfortunately, this makes him incredibly dangerous.

Goals/dreams/aspirations: To gain the power, bring back his father and rule over the world.

Fears: Defeat.

I hope this gave you a little insight on Zeke. He has been a challenging character to write for, but I am excited about it. Let me know what you think. I hope you have a great weekend!

As it Seems – A Poem

Hi everyone!

Happy Friday! I have another poem for you today. Enjoy 😊

As it Seems

It’s like a nightmare,
but you’re wide awake.
Holding on to what little
hope there is left today.

Faced with the prospect
of losing what has been
so wrongly taken for granted,
for so many years.

A burning ache deep
in the pit of your soul,
assures you it’s probably,
as bad as it seems.

What are your plans this weekend? More writing for me!

Alter Reach Character Profile: Braston

Hi everyone!

Happy Thursday. One step closer to Friday! My week has been flying by. I think I’ve had plans every night, which is abnormal for me.

I like doing these character profiles, so I’m doing another one. I’m really excited to introduce you to my absolute favorite character (don’t tell the others), Braston.

Name: Braston

Gender: Male

Age: Unknown. Best guess, early twenties, but he doesn’t age.

Background: Braston is a Parvus – a small, fairy-like creature that inhabits Alter Reach. He was out-casted by the Parvus community because of his curiosity. Parvus pride themselves on sticking to their own kind, living simple, non-adventurous lives. Braston has always been different, and when an opportunity arises for him to leave Alter Reach on an adventure, his small community banished him.

Appearance: Small, light as a feather. Brown, messy hair. Curious brown eyes.

Family: His family banished him. Faelyn is his family.

Friends: Faelyn is his best friend, although he likes every one else in the group.

Romance: It’s not something most Parvus think about, but Braston is not like most Parvus.

Introvert or extrovert? Extrovert.

Strengths: Curiousity, Adventerous, Loyal

Weaknesses: Braston is a bit naive. He thinks the best of people and often gets himself in trouble because of it.

Goals/dreams/aspirations: To live an adventerous life, but also gain back his communities trust.

Fears: Never seeing the Parvus community again.

I hope you enjoyed getting to know Braston a bit more. I can’t wait to introduce you to more characters. Have a great Thursday!

Alter Reach Character Profile: Faelyn

Hi Everyone!

Happy Tuesday. I hope your week is going well so far. Today, I wanted to do another Character Profile. Enjoy. 🙂

Name: Faelyn

Gender: Female

Age: 21

Background: Faelyn is a trouble-making, rule-breaking Elf, who really doesn’t care what anyone has to say. She has been through a lot – she watched Zeke slaughter her family in front of her. Since then, she has trained and worked hard to develop skills to take out anyone who tries to harm her or anyone she cares about. The only Elven tradition she has kept has been her bond with her bow, and she is deadly with her aim.

Appearance: Fiery red hair, diamond blue eyes, small, but muscular build.

Family: Her only known biological family was slaughtered by Zeke years ago. She has since been taken in by Eloise.

Friends: Braston is her best friend, and the only person she truly trusts.

Romance: Faelyn would tell you she has no time for petty things like romance. However, as her creator, I can tell you, she would love more fiercely than most.

Introvert or extrovert? Extrovert.

Strengths: Strength, courage, loyalty

Weaknesses: She has her guard up, and refuses to let it down, which can put her into some dangerous situations.

Goals/dreams/aspirations: At the moment, her goal is to kill Zeke and anyone who stands with him. I think her real dream is to be free and happy.

Fears: Losing Braston.

I hope you enjoyed getting to know Faelyn a little bit more. She has been one of my favorites to write during this process.

Black Hole – A Poem

Hi everyone!

Happy Friday. Short post today. Enjoy. 😊

Black Hole

You have made
yourself a bed
at the bottom of
the blackest hole.
Now you’re forced
to lie in it,
and that’s the reason,
you’re unable to
see the sun anymore.

I have lots of reading, writing and cleaning to catch up on, so I’m happy it is Friday! What are your plans for the weekend?

Before I Wake – Movie Review

Hi everyone!

Happy Tuesday. I hope you all had a great weekend. Today, I’m reviewing Before I Wake, which I watched on Netflix, Sunday.

As always, I will avoid spoilers. Enjoy 😊

Before I Wake
Drama, Fantasy, Horror
Director: Mike Flanagan
Writers: Mike Flanagan, Jeff Howard
Starring: Kate Bosworth, Thomas Jane, Jacob Tremblay

Synopsis:

Foster parents Mark and Jessie welcome 8-year-old Cody into their home. The boy tells Jessie that he’s terrified to fall asleep, but she assumes it’s just a natural fear for any young child. The couple become startled when their dead biological son suddenly appears in their living room. To their surprise, Cody’s dreams can magically become real but so can his nightmares. Mark and Jessie must now uncover the truth behind Cody’s mysterious ability before his imagination harms them all.

Review:

Before I Wake is an interesting blend of horror and fantasy in a way that I never expected. At its core, it is about a broken family who is striving to heal from an unthinkable accident, and a orphaned child striving to survive his nightmares.

Before I Wake is just as interested in making the viewer curious and invested in the characters as it is about the scares, which I think is refreshing. In the beginning, Jessie, is a grieving mother who can’t help but manipulate Cody. Cody is pretty well adjusted for the craziness he is experiencing.

Jacob Tremblay was perfect in the role of Cody, with his sophisticated and innocent demeanor. He was convincing and real. Such talent at such a young age.

Kate Bosworth’s portrayl of Jessie was also a stand out performance in Before I Wake. Jessie is a complex. She is genuine but she is also a grieving mother searching for peace and Bosworth plays this role amazingly.

The pacing in this film is, I think, what makes it so compelling. The writers wasted no time showing the beauty of Cody’s powers in the form of brightly colored butterflies filling Jessie and Mark’s home. It gives you, the viewer, this sense of hope and happiness. Shortly after, the mood changes for you, as the viewer, when you get your first glimpse of the Canker Man, the terror that also shows up when Cody dreams. It’s this back and forth of hope and dread that makes this a smart horror film. It doesn’t rely on lame jump scares.

Wrap-Up:

Before I Wake is an incredibly beautiful story and a very rewarding horror movie. What a lot of horror movies lack, this movie does exceedingling well. I definitely recommend this one!

Rating:

4/5☆

What did you think of Before I Wake?

I hope your week is short and happy! 😊

Alter Reach Character Profile: Marci

Hi everyone!

Happy Saturday!

It snowed quite a bit here. Yesterday, it was 56° and rainy, and this morning, I woke up to this:

(Sorry for the poor picture quality. My phone doesn’t have a great camera.)

Anyway, today, I wanted to give you a little insight into Alter Reach by giving you so more info on my main character, Marci. Enjoy 😊

Name: Marci Edleman

Gender: Female

Age: 21

Background: Marci has no idea where she came from or anything about her life before the last 5 years. After losing their memories, being accused of murder, and finally being cleared of all charges, Marci and her twin sister, Alyson parted ways. Marci, in hopes to put her forgotten past behind her, moved to New York City right after the charges were dropped and she graduated from high school. Alyson stayed behind in their hometown of Meadowbrook, vowing to find out what happened the night they lost their memories.

Appearance: Marci has a small, oval face and wavy, brown hair, that reaches her shoulder blades. It’s generally thrown up in a bun, though. She’s tall, about 5’8” and toned. Her eyes are dark brown. They often darken or lighten depending on her mood.

Family: The only family Marci knows is her twin sister, Alyson. However, when she moved to the city, she met Al. He owns a bar and offered her the apartment above it, rent free and a job. Al is like a father to Marci.

Friends: Al & Emma from the bar. Later in the story – Wren, Faelyn, Braston and Eloise.

Romance: After the inncident, Marci chose to focus on herself. She hasn’t had time to date, and she’s pretty awkward when it comes to guys.

Introvert or extrovert? Definitely introvert.

Strengths: Creative, logical, loyal, honest.

Weaknesses: She has a really hard time trusting people.

Goals/dreams/aspirations: All Marci wants is to be happy. She would tell you that she wants to forget the past and move on, but deep down, she wants to find out what happened to her.

Fears: Never truly learning who she is.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the world of Alter Reach. I plan to do more of these soon. If you were snowed in this morning where you live, I hope you stay safe! Have a great weekend!
