Today is my stop on the Heartache & Sin blog tour!
Heartache & Sin
By Charles Soto
Genre: Suspense, Drama
When a Midwestern farming town is hit hard by a crop-destroying drought, people are willing to put their faith into anything that might bring them some relief.
Steven Wheaton is burdened by the effects of the drought on his farm, and heartbroken knowing that the chances of starting a family with his wife Karen have been damaged by her recent diabetes diagnosis.
Devastated, Karen turns to the new pastor in town, looking for faith and guidance…but even her relationship with God cannot fill the void in her life.
When ulterior motives collide with harrowing miracles, where does the line between good and evil begin?
The synopsis of this one drew me in, and I knew I needed to read it. With themes of faith, devotion, love and family, Heartache & Sin, drew me in and held me until the very end of the story.
This is my second time reading a novel by Charles Soto, and to think this was his debut, I’m really impressed. His writing drew me in, and took me on the emotional rollercoaster, that I expected from this one! The descriptors of the cult, and how people are fooled into belieiving in Pastor Ryan is utterly terrifying. It’s scary to think of how easy it is for someone like Pastor Ryan to take the Word of the Bible and twist it to get people to follow them.
While we are on the subject, Pastor Ryan is one of those characters that makes a reader want to throw the book and pick it back up to find out what happens. He is a terrible man, and Charles Soto has no trouble showing us that. Mary, the pastor’s wife is a heartbreaking character. It’s a situation where she stays to keep her children safe, and frankly, difficult to read (and not in a bad way). Karen’s story is also heartbreaking, and she is such a well developed character. Steven has the difficult job of trying to show his vulnerable wife how manipulative Pastor Ryan is. He is caught between a rock and a hard place, and it was frustrating to read (again, not in a bad way).
I highly recommend checking out Heartache & Sin. Tough themes, fantastic writing, and a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat – this is a great book.
