The Gemini Connection by Teri Polen

Publication Date: June 7th, 2018

Genre: YA Science Fiction/ Dystopian

Teen twin brothers Evan and Simon Resnik are fiercely loyal to each other and share an unusual bond—they experience each other’s emotions as their own and can sense where the other is.

On their dying planet of Tage, scientists work tirelessly on its survival. Like the twins’ parents, Simon is a science prodigy, recruited at a young age to work with the brilliant creator of Scientific Innovations. To the bitter disappointment of their parents, Evan shows no aptitude or interest in science. As a Mindbender, he travels into the minds of scientists to locate buried memories, connect ideas and concepts, and battle recurring nightmares.

When Simon mysteriously disappears, Evan is plunged into a world of loss and unbearable guilt. For the first time, he can’t ‘feel’ Simon—it’s like he no longer exists. Evan blames himself. No one knows that he ignored his brother’s pleas for help on the night he went missing.

A year later, Simon is still gone. Evan lost his twin, but Tage might have lost its last hope of survival when it’s discovered that Simon’s unfinished project could be its salvation. Evan is determined to find him—somewhere—and bring Simon home. Their unusual connection might be more extraordinary than they know, and the key to locating Simon.

Ugly. That was the first word that came to mind. Deadly was next.

The twisted creation was courtesy of a new client, a scientist. The nightmare had been tormenting him for the past couple of weeks.

The monster stood roughly fifteen feet tall, walked on two legs, and stretched two muscled arms in front of it, but its elongated head was a grotesque combination of goat and demon. Treacherous horns protruded from either side of its skull, torso, and upper thighs, making it difficult for anyone to get close to the beast. Not that we especially wanted to, but it was part of a Bender’s job requirement to eradicate nightmares. So, we took up battle positions—Syd to its right, me to its left—crouched in anticipation of this formidable creature’s attack.

“I’ll go high, you go low,” I called to Syd. Besides a hideous appearance, the goat thing screeched like a deranged bird, and we strained to hear each other, even with the com units.

“Got it, Evan.” She unsheathed a ten-inch dagger from her utility belt, the silver blade glinting in the eerie cast of yellow-green light in this nightmare-scape. Being somewhat vertically-challenged (she hated it when I said short), Syd might not look intimidating, but give the girl a knife and she was absolutely lethal. The creature’s leg tendons would be sliced to ribbons in seconds.

Syd dived to the creature’s right, spinning and coming up behind it, as she avoided an angry kick to her head. She carved into its left limb, and it let out an ear-piercing shriek.

I withdrew an iron mallet from my own belt and catapulted myself off the wall, soaring over the goat-demon and landing a blow to the left side of its skull. Its head jerked in my direction when I came down on its other side. The sharpened tip of the horn caught the left side of my rib cage, and a warm flow of blood seeped through my shirt. Wouldn’t be the first time I’d walked away from a nightmare with a permanent scar.

Syd scrambled around its legs, careful not to be trampled. Her dagger was a silver blur as she slashed the gray-haired appendages, the goat-demon staggering in its efforts to avoid her blade.

The ground was wet—possibly blood. But with dream or nightmare creations, you couldn’t be sure. Because this thing’s creator was a scientist, they tended to more detail-oriented. Odds leaned in the blood direction.

The light around us took on a red hue. Did the ambient illumination correlate to the creature’s anger level? If yellow-green meant annoyed, did red mean take no prisoners?

For the next two weeks that I was in possession of your story, it was as if someone had seen me, claimed me. I had a sister, a mother, an aunt, a place in which I was loved and understood and cared for. I was connected to something solid and real, for even if the story wasn’t real, a real woman had written it, had understood the pain that comes with being rejected and lonely; the angst that comes with being a girl severed from her roots and family.

“I need to be with Bubbie. I want to be there every day. When she is sick or tired. When she needs help.” I take breath. “I will stay and take care of Bubbie and go to school in January.”

“I don’t like this idea,” Mom says.

Dad sips his coffee instead of gulps. “I don’t know if the deferment is a good idea or not,” he says. “But staying in California for that long? I think it’s sweet to want to stay and care of Bubbie, but what else will you be doing?” He looks at my mom.

Then Mom explodes. “Stan, she is not deferring.” Finally, she looks at me. “You are not deferring. I’m calling Emerson tomorrow to straighten this out.”

This is so ridiculous. When are they going to get it? I stand up. “You know what? This is crazy. I’ve been losing sleep and getting all panicky again over this for the past few weeks and for what? For what reason? Fear of disappointing you? And now here I am full-blown disappointing you both and I did not fall apart or die. I am still here. And so are you guys.” I think of Susan’s opening lines to her speech. Welcome to the last day of childhood. “I’m an adult now, Mom. You guys have to let me make my decisions, without trying to guilt me into doing what you want.” And with that, I walk my adult self out of the living room, and they don’t follow.

Right below the pipe, a human hand and wrist poked out from the dirt, its flesh partly rotted away. The fingers pointed at us.

I let out a panicked yell identical to Robert’s but stood frozen. A hot, prickly feeling crawled up my back as Sean as shouted to Robert. “You okay, Robber?” When Robert murmured a response, Sean scrambled down to the creek. “Cover it up!” he demanded as he went, pointing at me. “Cover it back up!”

“We can’t just…” I started.

“Cover it up!” Sean was bending over, one hand on Robert’s shoulder. “Just do it!”

I shoveled dirt and leaves at the void, breathing as little as possible and only glancing occasionally at the rotted appendage sticking out at me. Each scoop of crumbly soil slid back down, so finally I started stomping on it to get it to stay, right on top of the hand. I felt as if I was pressing down on something evil. Trying to keep it back. After a minute, Sean stood next to me working with Robert’s abandoned shovel. With his head turned away from the hole, he didn’t help much.

Robert sat where he was, letting out little wails every now and then. It wasn’t a sound like the pain of a sprained ankle or something. It was more like the desperate moans of someone who’d forgotten how to talk.

Once we managed to get the hand covered, we scrambled down the bank, grabbed Robert by his arms, then half carried him and the tools back to the workshop we’d taken over from Sean’s dad. After breathing the rotten stench of the creek, I barely noticed Robert’s smell and couldn’t get that image of the decaying hand out of my mind.

We set Robert down in one of the beaten-up old armchairs we’d dragged in there, then sank down ourselves, panting. The hot prickly feeling was still crawling all over me. Sean and I looked at each other for a few seconds, then away. Robert stared at the floor.

I’d never seen a real skeleton — or a dead body – before. The tuna sandwich I’d eaten an hour earlier seemed to be on a climb back up. I imagined the scene once we called the sheriff; Sean’s parents would arrive home to a flock of cop cars in the driveway. Maybe there’d be a coroner’s van. They’d love driving into that mess.

Then things went from bad to worse. Sean leaned forward and pointed one finger at me and one at Robert. “We can’t tell anyone about this.”

Robert peered out from under the layer of the coarse black hair fallen in front of his eyes. “But Sean, somebody buried a body.”

“We know that, Robert,” Sean snapped. His nasty scowl reminded me of his father. “But nobody else is going to know that.”

“Why not?” that high voice again. “That body where it is, it’s not by accident.”

Sean turned to me, “Brianna, you know why we can’t tell anyone.” Like he was pleading with me. “You know.”

After some childhood acting and living in England for a year, I graduated from Reed College, then attended law school. As a litigator in California and Washington State for thirty years, I learned a great deal about what people really want, and also how humor helps in tough situations.

Writing remains my main interest. I am the author of Just Trust Me: Finding the Truth in the World of Spin (Quest Books, 2011), a book about discerning truth from appearances. My young adult novel, A Step Away, will be published by Black Rose in 2019.

I have also written a couple of short plays, which were performed at a local theatre in Marin County, CA. The Ribbons Agency is a nearly completed satirical book about the arduous task of securing a literary agent. On a more serious note, I am working on a non fiction book that presents a unique, logical reason to believe that greater international peace is inevitable.

A resident of San Francisco’s east bay for most of my life, I have lived along Hood Canal (a fjord and part of Puget Sound) in Washington State for the past three years. I’m still adapting to the weather, though it keeps me inside and productive most of the year. When not writing, I’m enjoying the outdoors or playing improvisational piano.

BLOG TOUR | At the End of the Summer – June Moonbridge

Hi everyone!

Today is my stop on the blog tour for At the End of the Summer.

Joshua’s life as a rock guitarist seems like a dream come true. Sold out concerts, red carpet events and wild nights portray him as a confident young man with the world at his feet. Only few friends know the scars he carries.

When freelance photographer Caroline meets the rock band Burning Ruins at the after party, an irresistible chemistry of attraction between her and the sexy rock guitarist is clearly seen to everybody. However, after a forced conversation from Joshua’s side, Caroline’s convinced the attraction is not mutual.

Waking up the next morning, Caroline has no idea what happened. She flees out of the hotel room mortified, convinced she’d become another of the band’s trophies. Determined never to meet anyone from Burning Ruins ever again, she has no clue people around her have different ideas.

In a summer that takes them from London to Wales and to the sultry heat of Rome, they’re desperately fighting their demons from the past, while trying to protect their broken hearts. Will they ever let each other mend their broken hearts or will they try to heal them alone?

Review:

I’ve been challenging myself in 2019 to read more contemporary romances because it is a genre I typically don’t reach for (but throughouly enjoy if well written). I’m really glad I took a chance on At the End of the Summer. It’s a beautifully written story. June Moonbridge captivated me with her characters and had me fully invested in this light hearted romance.

I really enjoyed the characters. Caroline and Joshua were well rounded and relatable. Neither perfect, both with their own flaws and personality quirks, but it just made me like them more.

If you’re a Contemporary Romance fan, At the End of the Summer is definitely for you. If you’re not typically drawn to this genre, you should still give it a go. I highly recommend it!

June was born in June and she always loved the moon. Born and raised in Slovenia, she studied economics, and quickly realised she hated it.

However, later she found herself working in mainly male-dominated businesses. She can choose the best steel for your project, but don’t, please don’t, ask her which lipstick brand you should use.

Although her writing was constantly criticised by her teacher that didn’t stop her. Under different pen names, she had stories published in magazines, and then went on to publish three books under pen name Eri Krt.

After having two children, and learning that her second child has autism, she married their father and carried on working. Work and family life left her with little free time. But the desire to write didn’t die.

Always looking for something new, she challenged herself to write a novel in English and all her three novels:

All that the Heart Desires
Caught Between Two Worlds
And
At the End of the Summer

are a result of that continuous challenge …

Review:

This book is terrifying because GD Parker has crafted this so well, it really could happen. I’m unnerved and wanting more. It’s only January, and I am already saying Black Matter is one of my favorite reads of 2019!

The narrator changes a lot, but this novel is so well written that I wasn’t confused in the slightest. Every character is well rounded and discernable. Some were likeable and some gave me chills.

The action and suspense of this novel had me on the edge of my seat. I avsolutely could not put this one down. I highly recommend checking it out, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

BLOG TOUR | Awakening the Trinity – Brittany Elise

Hi everyone!

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Awakening the Trinity.

In the seventeenth-century, an all-powerful witch called Rionach the Dark ruled the Celtic nations with an army of enslaved werewolves. In order to restore balance between Light and Dark, the Trinity of Light was summoned to vanquish the Dark Witch and end the Battle of the Dark Ages.

Seventeen-year-old Quinn Callaghan lives in the small, rustic town of Silver Mountain. Its location may be rural, but it is home to an ancient pine forest that surrounds a supernatural hotspot–a nexus of raw and powerful energy.

When a charismatic witch from Ireland, and a mysterious guy with a secret of his own are drawn to the area, Quinn finds out that she inherited her rare abilities from a revered ancestor. Could it be that she shares a bloodline with the Original Trinity? Nearly 300 years later, the Darkness is returning to Silver Mountain, and the Trinity must stop it.

Review:

A wonderful mix of YA paranormal and mystery, Awakening the Trinity had me hooked from page one.

Quinn is a great character. She is down to earth and relatable. I love that she is kind and she has qualities that make her very likable. The rest of the cast of characters are relatable and support the story well. Every character had a purpose and I enjoyed each one.

The mystery was well done. I love the pacing, and I love Brittany Elise’s writing style. She has a way of keeping the reader hooked, and I really can’t wait to read more from her.

I highly recommend checking this book out!

My love for writing began at a very young age–way before I could even type on a keyboard. I was always writing short stories and poems with a fan club of one (my mom.) I never stopped writing, but I don’t think I believed in myself enough to actually pursue it as a career. When I enrolled in college, I took as many creative writing classes as they offered, and ended up graduating with a degree in photography and minoring in English. I enjoy art in all its forms, but writing has always been my first love. Even when I was pursuing other careers, writing was always my go-to comfort. I later became an animal obedience instructor and met a children’s author through my dog training. She helped me get my foot through the door, so to speak, and I haven’t turned back since. During the day, I manage an FBO at my local hometown airport, and by night, I dive into my writing with my husband and my four-legged children by my side.

Hi everyone!

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Whisper to Me.

A new wife and a vengeful ghost. Not a good mix.
Letitia – Tish – Stanyer makes husband Theo promise never to remarry if she dies and he complies just to pacify her. She isn’t going to die.

She does – and he does remarry. Tish isn’t happy. Her spirit cannot rest with another woman in her domain, sampling the delights of her husband. Theo belongs to her – Sheena will have to go.

Review:

The blurb for this had me hooked and I knew I needed to read it. It’s a cautionary tale about not making promises you can’t keep and I really enjoyed this one.

I love that this is a family drama with a ghostly twist. The characters are really well rounded and drive the plot forward, and the supernatural twist adds an extra layer to an already well written novel.

If you love family dramas and you love paranormal, Whisper to Me is a fantastic blend of the two. I highly recommend it.

I am a divorced mum of two adult sons and nana to three grandchildren, soon to be four. I’ve always had a notion to write but didn’t get round to it seriously until I became ill with M.E in 1995 when I was 40 and was too ill to continue my job as a learning support assistant in a mainstream high school. I was devastated to have to resign from my job but writing saved my sanity. My first attempt was a memoir, Shadow Across the Sun which covered the loss of my mum to breast cancer two days before my 13th birthday. When the rejections began to flow in from traditional publishers and agencies I joined a creative writing class and learned to write fiction. Whisper to Me is my 10th novel. I have a strong belief in the afterlife due to events following my mum’s death so most of my stories have some form of supernatural aspect to them.

Matt had never been one to let a chance to provoke Jenna slip by. “I know what I’m getting you for Christmas,” he chided.

“Does it involve a trip to some tropical island and drinks with those tiny umbrellas in them?” Jenna quipped back.

“What makes you think I’d take you somewhere like that?” he retorted.

A sly smirk slinked up one corner of Jenna’s mouth. “What makes you think I was going to take you with me on my little island excursion? It’s my present.”

Matt shook his head. “A watch, Jenna. I’m getting you a watch. Not that you’d use it.”

He checked his mirrors and backed out of the driveway.

“Alright, children. Let’s play nice,” Halle interrupted before the back and forth really took off.

“That was nice,” Jenna mumbled.

“Yeah, about as nice as when you two ditched me at Levi’s Halloween party. Left me with a house full of masked marauders, and I don’t mean the interesting comic book kind.” Matt glared at Jenna in the rear-view mirror.

“Why are you looking at me like that? Halle bailed on you, too!”

“Hey now!” Halle piped in.

“She was hurt. She gets a pass. You could have found me, or called, or texted, or something.” His words came across with a little something Halle couldn’t help but be concerned about. For the past year, she had watched as Matt and Jenna bantered back and forth, always teetering on the edge of something more than friendship but never slipping over. Halle found herself glancing between the two, wondering if Jenna’s secret was why she had always kept Matt at arm’s length.

Jenna went silent for a moment. The countenance of her face saying more than words could. “I’m sorry, Matt. You’re right. I should have let you know. Forgive me?”

Matt’s eyes darted between the road and the rear view mirror several times before he blew out a heavy breath and his stare rested on the mirror for a long moment. “I forgave you the moment it happened. You know that,” he replied.

“Of course you did,” Jenna chimed. “You can’t stay mad at me. I won’t let you.” She stuck her tongue out at him.

Halle laughed at the exchange. “You two are something else.”

“Don’t know what you’re laughing at,” Matt remarked as he turned the Jeep into the school parking lot. “You’re friends with both of us. What does that say about you?”

“That I’m crazier than I thought,” Halle muttered. “But hey, at least y’all are entertaining.”

She adjusted her sunglasses and reached for her bag in the floorboard. “I’ll see you guys at lunch. I need to bolt. Have to try to get to Senior Mozingo’s class before homeroom to ask about some work I missed.”

“You sure you’re not just trying to avoid him?” Jenna asked as she nodded her head at the guy standing on the sidewalk straight ahead of the Jeep.

“Crap,” Halle mumbled.

“Want me to run him over?” Matt smiled. “I can say the gear slipped.”

Halle rolled her eyes, though her sunglasses hid the gesture. “No. I don’t want you to run him over. Geesh. But . . . you could run interference for me.”

“And you don’t think hitting him with a car would do that?” Matt grinned.

“Nevermind. I don’t want to deal with the police interrogation afterward. I’ll just do the best I can.” Halle made a face at Matt, slipped out of the Jeep, and eased toward the back of the car parked beside them.

BLOG TOUR | Mask of the Gods – Karen Furk

Hi everyone!

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Mask of the Gods.

Soul Demons live off the souls of the living.

When Haydan’s home world is invaded by a soul demon seeking an item shrouded in myth and legend, his father evicts him and sends him to safety. His chosen one and warrior should provide reassurance and sanctuary, but neither appears to be working very well. Just when he thinks matters cannot get any worse his scheming grandmother arrives. She has her own plans that appear to involve him, none of which bodes well.

Diego feels confident he has the soul demon under control. Overlooking his devious mother’s involvement, he fails to appreciate that he is not only storm rider elder, but also an elven prince and certain debts are about to become due.

Lavinia worries about her grandson, but also who she left behind in the elven realm a long time ago. Tallin thinks she abandoned him and he is livid. She has everything under control, including Tallin…at least that is what she thinks.

They all need to learn afresh who to trust. With a soul demon on the rampage, an unleashed, angry and betrayed elven king and a long-forgotten mask surfacing, what could possibly go wrong?

The past is about to catch up with all of them. Nothing is going to go as planned because the mask and the gods have other ideas.

Review:

Three words: INCREDIBLE WORLD BUILDING.

Mask of the Gods is one of those Fantasy novels that, if you’re into Fantasy, you’re not going to want to put down. I’m in love with the world and the characters, and I am really pumped to read the rest of this series.

Karen Furk has crafted a unique novel, with complex characters, immersive worlds and beautiful writing. I loved the themes of love, betrayal and revenge weaved into this novel. I can’t praise this novel enough and I don’t want to spoil anything.

I highly recommend diving into this one. It’s a long book, but I devoured it quickly and I can’t wait to continue on.

Hi everyone!

It’s up to Jamie to find the real murderer before it’s too late. It doesn’t help that the victim is a former rock star with more enemies than friends, or that Adam confessed to a murder he didn’t commit.

Review:

Death by Didgeridoo is a quick whodunit with an interesting and compelling protagonist and a fun mystery. It’s the first in a series that I think is off to promising start!

I enjoyed the first person POV of this story, letting us really get inside Jamie’s head. She’s a lawyer, which gives her a unique take on the world. I’m really looking forward to seeing her progress as a character in the series.

The mystery was well written with some red harrings left, so that I wasn’t exactly sure of the outcome. I am really impressed with Barbara Venkataraman’s writing and I am really looking forward to reading more from her!

BOOK REVIEW | The Garden of Stars – Samuel Canerday

Hi everyone!

Today I am reviewing The Garden of Stars!

A young, unnamed narrator eschews a typical life of going to college and settling into a career and, after having a fight with his mother about this fact, decides to run away from his life. He escapes to the town of Mable Point, and here he decides to strike out anew and carve out a new path for himself. However, things quickly prove to not be as they seem in the town, where a beautiful, other-wordly place known as The Iris Gardens resides, and the narrator finds himself caught in the midst of strange visions, shadowy figures wandering the town, and multicolored lights that shine in the bay to the south east of the town. Along the way, he makes two friends, James and Gavin, and together, they must work to unravel the mystery of The Garden of Stars. A gripping tale of dangerous self-discovery, The Garden of Stars evokes the idea of a world ripe for exploration and growth, contrasted with the horror of loss and betrayal. Drawing inspiration from the works of H.P. Lovecraft, it is a tale of both human connections and the futility of understanding things far outside our comprehension.

Review:

The Garden of Stars is hauntingly beautiful.  Samuel Canerday’s writing is wonderful and mesmerizing. I had a difficult time setting this one down and read it in one day. I was enchanted by the world and the mystery surrounding The Garden of Stars.

I loved the unnamed narrator. It was easy to put myself in the main character’s position, and it just made the story more relatable. I also enjoyed the two friends, James and Gavin, both having a key role to play.

This is one of those stories yu just need to read. The themes of self-discovery and growth are strong, and the writing is poetic. I am a fan of Samuel Canerday and I look forward to reading more from him in the future.

Samuel Canerday grew up in the state of Colorado, and will forever remember the sight of the Rocky Mountains looming miles to the west. He started writing from an early age, and his fascination with mythology led to a fondness for verse from reading Homeric epics. After relocating to the south-east US, he continued his creative endeavors and developed an ardent passion for the genre of horror, finding inspiration in the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Robert W. Chambers, and Edgar Allen Poe. He now seeks to blend the broad, metaphorical concepts of mythology with the subtle nature of horror, linking the most innate nature of mankind with the shadows that are often regarded by humans as bestial and dark.
