Finally Fall Book Tag!

Hi there!

Happy Wednesday. I wanted to do this tag because I love fall. I found it here.

Quick announcement: I’m almost to 100 followers! That is my first goal of many for this blog, and as soon as I hit 100, I plan to do a giveaway. Stay tuned for that! 😊

Finally Fall Book Tag

1. In fall, the air is crisp and clear: name a book with a vivid setting!

I’m going to go with Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor. The world building in this one is fantastic, and the setting is super vivid!

2. Nature is beautiful… but also dying: name a book that is beautifully written, but also deals with a heavy topic like loss or grief.

I’m picking My Story by Elizabeth Smart. Very heavy, written by a very strong woman.

3. Fall is back to school season: share a non-fiction book that taught you something new.

How to Make a Living as a Writing – James Scott Bell

4. In order to keep warm, it’s good to spend some time with the people we love: name a fictional family/household/friend-group that you’d like to be a part of.

Harry, Ron & Hermione will be a popular answer for this, but I’m going with it because it’s true.

5. The nights are getting darker: share a dark, creepy read.

The Call by Peadar O’Guilin. Review coming soon, but it’s a creepy one!

6. The days are getting colder: name a short, heartwarming read that could warm up somebody’s cold and rainy day.

I’m lame. I don’t really have a suggestion for this. Most short stories I’ve read have been creepy, haha.

7. Fall returns every year: name an old favorite that you’d like to return to soon.

I’ve been wanting to re-read The Hunger Games series.

8. Fall is the perfect time for cozy reading nights: share your favorite cozy reading “accessories”!

Blanket and warm pumpkin spice chai latte. 🙂

As usual, I tag anyone who wants to participate, just let me know so I can read your answers.

All Hallows Write Tag

Hello! I hope you’re all having a great Monday (as great as a Monday can be).

I wanted to take quick second to say my thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been affected by these terrible tragedies (hurricanes, shootings, etc.).

I found this tag here. I love Fall and Halloween is my favorite. I am excited to do a Halloween themed tag, and you can be sure it won’t be my last this month.

All Hallows Write Tag

The Rules:
#1 – Provide a BRIEF description of your novel before starting.

#2 – Don’t use the same character for more than 3 answers.

Brief Description of Alter Reach: Twins, Marci and Alyson journey to a world they were forced to forget and fight a battle they didn’t know was coming.

The Questions:

1. It’s Halloween night! What is your protagonist dressed up as?

Marci would probably be dressed up as

2. Who in your cast refuses to dress up and shows up to the Halloween party without a costume?

Astrid. She would find the entire idea of dressing up absurd, and she would probably spend the entire night scowling in the corner.

3. Which character wears the most outrageous costume, and what would it be?

Faelyn would find a way to be a dragon. She’d light an arrow on fire and pretend breathe fire at Zeke.

4. On Halloween, werewolves, vampires, and zombies are on the prowl. Which one of your characters gets caught in their clutches and which creature do they subsequently turn into.

Alyson would most certainly fall for a vampire’s seduction and become one. She’s a gullible one.

5. Who wins the contest for best costume?

Braston. He could come as himself and everyone would vote for him because he’s that awesome.

6. Who hands out toothbrushes to trick and treaters?

Eloise. She would be muttering about how terrible candy is.

7. Which two of your characters decide to pair up and do an angel/devil costume?

Jade would force Zeke to wear the devil costume and parade around telling everyone how angelic she is.

8. Someone is too scared to even attend the Halloween party. Who is it?

Hmm. Good question. Maybe Al. Only because he wouldn’t want to be seen by Zeke.

9. Who overdoses on Halloween candy and ends up sick.

Pierce, because he is doing anything to avoid the annoyed chatter of Astrid.

10. Which character is most likely to place a curse on someone and who would they curse?

Astrid. She hates this party, and she’d definitely curse Marci.

I tag anyone who wants to do the tag. Just let me know in the comments below so I can read your answers.

Bookish Scenarios Tag

Hi everyone! I’m super excited because my hubby and I decided to make this weekend a long weekend. I plan to spend lots of time with him but also get a lot of stuff done (like reading the books on my TBR for this month!). I wanted to do a quick tag tonight before diving back into reading. I found this tag on Katytastic’s YouTube channel.

Bookish Scenarios

1. You have to get rid of all your books and you can only keep one from each of these genres – contemporary, fantasy, non-fiction and one other genre of your choosing. What books do you keep?

Contemporary: I don’t read a ton of contemporary, so I am going to go with The Fault in Our Stars because it’s one of the only ones on my shelf.

Fantasy: Hmm. Tough one, but I will go wit The Lord of the Rings. Can we pretend the entire series is one book?

Non-Fiction: Six Days of Creation. Cool Christian science book.

Sci-fi (genre of my choice): Illuminae. Hands down. It might be my favorite book.

2. You’re at the bookstore and you hear a teenager telling their mom they don’t like to read, but their mom insists they pick something. You walk over and recommend a book you think is great for people who aren’t big on reading – what book is it?

Hmm. Good question. Maybe Harry Potter? It’s a fun read and I don’t think it’s too challenging.

3. You’re not feeling yourself and need a pick me up. Which book do you read to put yourself in a great mood?

Eve: The Awakening by Jenna Moreci. It’s such a kick-butt book. I love it.

4. You go back in time for a day to your teenage years. What book would you most likely have caught yourself reading?

Twilight. Yeah, I was one of those.

5. Your friend surprises you with a 4 day trip and you have 1 hour to pack. Which book do you bring to read on the way?

I’m bringing Passengers, because I just started reading it and I can’t wait to finish it.

6. Your house has been robbed! Don’t worry – everyone is safe, but your bookshelf has been raided. What’s the book you really hope is safe?

Eve: The Awakening because it’s a signed copy and I don’t want to loose it. (Yes, I used this book for multiple answers).

7. Your friend borrows a book and returns it in awful condition. Do you a) Just pretend you haven’t noticed b) Ask them to repurchase it or c) Secretly do the same to something of theirs

I’d say something, and ask for them to repurchase. If you’re borrowing my books, you best be nice to them.

That’s all I have for you tonight. As always, I tag you if you want to participate. Let me know in the comments if you do, I’d love to read your responses.

Not really. The only thing I need to do is shut down Twitter…because Twitter is the downfall of my writing progress.

I- Irritatewhat irritates you most when you struggle with writing?

Lack of ability to write what I’m seeing in my head. The visuals are there, but the words aren’t flowing. That is just so disheartening.

Creating relatable characters. I love creating diverse, relatable personalities.

E- Essentialwhat part of writing is absolutely essential to who you are?

All parts of writing? I don’t think I can pick one part of writing. Writing in general just means so much to me.

Reading Habits Book Tag

Hello there! Since I’m working through my SSeptember TBR, I thought it would be fun to do a reading book tag. I came across the tag here.

1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

Either on the couch or in bed. Some day, I will have a special place in my house for reading and writing, but for now, I make do with the apartment.

2. Bookmark or random piece of paper?

Normally, I use a random piece of paper, but I purchased a few pretty bookmarks from our church’s bookstore, so I use them.

3. Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/ a certain amount of pages?

I have page number goals for my September TBR challenge. If I don’t have a page number goals, I need to stop at the end of a chapter. I definitely can’t stop in the middle of one.

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?

Water, mostly. I am trying to lose some weight, so snacking while reading or writing is out of the question at the moment.

5. Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?

I can listen to music with no lyrics, but that is it. As with writing, TV or songs with people singing will distract me from the task.

6. One book at a time or several at once?

One book at a time. When I attempt more than one at a time, I don’t finish any of them.

7. Reading at home or everywhere?

At home or on break at work. I don’t sit in a restaurant to read, but I will read anywhere that’s appropriate.

8. Reading out lout or silently in your head?

Silently in my head…unless I want Paul to hear a sentence for some reason.

9. Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

No way.

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

Like new.

11. Do you write in your books?

Nope. If I’m taking notes for a review, I write them down in a separate notebook. I love my books too much to do anything to them.

Reader Problems Book Tag

Hello everyone! Two blog posts in one day – unheard of! I’m really trying to get back on my game of writing consistently, so here I am. 😛

This is a tag I found on Katytastic’s YouTube channel – check it out. If you want to answer the questions, I tag you. Let me know you did it so I can read your answers! 🙂

QUESTIONS

1. You have 20,000 books on your TBR. How in the world do you decide what to read next?

I don’t really have a strategy for this. I normally just look at my shelf and grab a book that sticks out to me. The only time I pick a specific book is if I am reading through a series. For example, the Hunger Games – I read the books, one after another.

2. You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it. Do you quit or are you committed?

Sometimes I quit, sometimes I commit to the end. If I am reaching the “exciting” portion of the book and still not loving it, I put it down. There have been times when I was reading a book and thinking about putting it down, but I powered through and ended up loving the book. This is rare though.
3. The end of the year is coming and you’re so close, but so far away on your GoodReads reading challenge. Do you try to catch up and how?

I set unrealistic GoodReads reading challenges for myself, but I try to catch up by reading as much as possible whenever I have a chance.

4. The covers of a series you love do. not. match. How do you cope?

This bothers me so much…but I still buy the un-matching book because I am not satisfied until I have the entire series on my shelf.

5. Every one and their mother loves a book you really don’t like. Who do you bond with over shared feelings?

I don’t really have anyone to bond over my shared hatred of certain books…except maybe my husband, but he isn’t really into the books I’m into so that doesn’t always work. I just look up YouTube reviews and try to find people who have similar opinions.

6. You’re reading a book and you are about to start crying in public. How do you deal?

I leave said public setting and finish reading the tear-worthy section. If I’m in a situation that I can’t leave, I’m normally not reading.

7. A sequel of a book you loved just came out, but you’ve forgotten a lot from the prior novel. Will you re-read the book? Skip the sequel? Try to find a synopsis on Goodreads? Cry in frustration?!?!?!?

Sometimes I re-read the book, sometimes I find a synopsis. It depends on how long it’s been since I read the prior book. Normally, I start reading a series after all the books have come out anyway, so I’m not in this situation often.

8. You do not want anyone. ANYONE. borrowing your books. How do you politely tell people nope when they ask?

I let people borrow books once and a while, but it has to be someone I trust. I love my books, don’t get me wrong, but if it’s a story I think people should read, I am happy to let them read it.

9. Reading ADD. You’ve picked up and put down 5 books in the last month. How do you get over your reading slump?

This is me, right now. I try to power through it by picking a book that I have been excited to read. This normally helps me to get back into it.

10. There are so many new books coming out that you’re dying to read! How many do you actually buy?

I only spend money when I know I can..so I suffer through wanting all the books until I can either afford them or ask for them for Christmas 🙂

11. After you’ve bought the new books you can’t wait to get to, how long do they sit on your shelf before you get to them?

It depends on where I am on my TBR list. Sometimes the new book is at the top, and sometimes it’s a little farther down. I only buy a book if it’s in the top 5 of my reading TBR unless I’m buying from a used book store and find something that just interests me.

Well, there it is. Last post for today, but I’m hoping I will be better about posting now. Thanks for sticking with me! 🙂

My Life In Books Tag

Hey there everyone! Ugh, it’s only Tuesday 😴… I hope you made it through your day okay!

Today, I thought I would do another tag, because these are always fun to do. This is the “My Life in Books” tag. I tag anyone who would like to participate!
1. Find a book for each of your initials.

J – Jurassic Park

E – Eve: The Awakening

S – Six of Crows

S – Salem’s Lot

I – Illuminae

C – Cinder

A – Allegiant

2. Count your age along your bookshelf, which book is it?

The 5th Wave

3. Pick a book set in your city/state/country.

Is it cheating if I pick my own book, Alter Reach? Oh well if it is. It’s set in NY, part of the time. 😊

4. Pick a book that represents a destination you would like to travel to.

The Harry Potter universe would be pretty sweet to travel to!

5. Pick a book (cover) that is your favorite color.

Illuminae…the cover is mostly orange and that’s my favorite color!

6. Which book do you have the fondest memories of?

Hmm. Probably Twilight. I know, I know…they aren’t good books, but it was the series that got me into reading as much as I do now. Twilight was the first book I ever marathoned in one day. I owe it a little credit for getting me into better books later down the road.

7. Which book did you have the most difficulty reading?

Probably Lord of the Rings. I read the entire series but it was a struggle. They aren’t bad books, just lengthy and descriptive.

8. Which book in your TBR pile will give you the biggest sense of accomplishment when you finish it?

Gemina…it’s the second book in the Illuminae series and it was on the top of my to buy list. I own it now and have been struggling to find the time to finish it. 😭

That is all I have for you today.

You can read Chapter One of Alter Reach here.

Would You Rather Author Tag

Hello everyone! I hope you’re having a great week. I know I’m looking forward to the weekend, as always. Here’s another Tag for you to enjoy.

Have a Male main character or a Female main character?
Tough call. Alter Reach has a female lead, but I think I’d like to write a book with a male lead too.

Wake up before dawn every day write or stay up into the early morning hours to write?
I’m a weirdo, and I don’t know how to sleep in, and I can barely stay awake past 9…so I’m going with morning writing hours.

Write a book that is torturous to write but which is very popular or write a book that is fun to write but which is only known by a small audience?
Write a book that’s fun to write. I don’t write to be popular, I write because it’s something I love to do. I wouldn’t write if it was torturous.

Write a SciFi story or a Fantasy story?
I’m writing a Fantasy now…want to write a SciFi next. So, I’m saying both!

Use first person or third person?
I think I like to write in third person for the most part. Every time I’ve attempted first, I haven’t gotten very far in the story.

Meet any character of any book/short-story in real life for one day or personally know any author you wish?
Personally know any author. That would be pretty sweet.

Only be able to write dialog if you act out the voices out loud or only be able to write action if you act it out in real life?
Dialog. Can you imagine having to act out action scenes?

Publish with the most successful publishing house in your genre but have to wait 2 years to see your book in print or self publish with no expense or marketing assistance but see your book in print within 3 months?
Self publish. That’s the avenue I’m going with. There are benefits to both, but I’ve decided self publishing is what is best for my story.

Write a goofy story or write a serious story?
I guess serious. I’m not very funny.

Write a story knowing that you will have to kill off the main character eventually or write a story knowing that everyone the main character is close to you will eventually have to kill off?
Kill the main character. It’s less expected.

Leave your ending somewhat open and bittersweet or leave your ending on a cliffhanger?
Somewhat open and bittersweet. Cliffhangers make me want to throw books at walls, and I don’t want that to happen to a copy of Alter Reach 😛

Write in many different genres or write only in one genre?
Different genres. It’s my plan…I think it will help me to branch out and challenge my creativity.

Have all of your characters have some physical deformity or have all of your characters have some internal twisted nature?
Internal twisted nature.

Have an orphaned main character with good friends or a main character with a good-sized family and family problems?
Orphaned main character.

Write the sex scene or not write the sex scene?
Not write the sex scene.

Write about uncertain dangers and intrigue or write about direct confrontation and violence?
Uncertain dangers and intrigue. I like to read books like this, so it only makes sense that I would like to write like this.

You can read Chapter One of Alter Reach here.

Alter Reach Writing Tag!

Hello! Today’s blog post is another tag. This time, I’m answering the questions with characters from my WIP, Alter Reach. If you’re new here, I’ll give you a little background info on Alter Reach.

Three years ago, twins, Marci and Olivia Edelman, woke to find their parents had vanished. After touching a strange stone, the twins’ memories are suddenly wiped and all they remember is each other. A full FBI investigation turns up no leads on the disappearance and a full psych evaluation turns up no leads on their strange case of amnesia. The sisters are left to face a town full of rumors and accusations. Right after graduation, Marci moves to New York City to escape while Olivia vows to figure out what happened that night. On the third anniversary, Olivia shows up on Marci’s doorstep with a lead, a strange man named Zeke, who claims he knows where their parents are.

1. A crazy hacker’s gone into your computer, and has deleted all of your music, except for one song off of your writing playlist. Which song is it?

What a horrible thing to do to someone.
Anyway, if I had to pick one song off my Alter Reach playlist, I guess I’d go with Lindsey Stirling’s Lost Girls. This song just really brings me to a lot of places when I’m writing Alter Reach, so I wouldn’t want to lose all that inspiration.

2. Your protagonist and antagonist have been paired up by friends to go out to lunch together. Where do they go?

I don’t really want to go with the obvious antagonist here because I think this answer would be a little more interesting. Watching Marci and Jade trying to choke down a lunch without murdering each other would be so fantastically awkward to witness. I feel like Jade wouldn’t even consider this proposition unless they were going somewhere fancy and high class. They would probably settle on Olive Garden after Marci convinced Jade she could still wear her cocktail dress there.

3. You’re crossing a bridge when the troll living under it stops you. He demands to read a chapter from your novel, and won’t let you cross otherwise. Which chapter do you give him?

I guess I would give him Chapter 7 because that is where you start putting the pieces together of the mystery. I feel like the troll would be satisfied understanding why Marci and Olivia lost their memories.

4. Your friends have invited you out to a party. Surprise! All of your characters are there. Who do you choose to hang out with?

I wouldn’t hang out with Cybil because she is effing crazy. She would not be fun and I think she’d be the hardest to control. All Cybil wants to do is murder people. That doesn’t sound like a party to me.

Faelyn is bad ass. She is the kind of friend you want with you during any crisis and any party. She’s going to keep you level headed with her smarts and grounded with her sarcasm. Faelyn likes her vodka and would be a good wing woman to help you get the attention of the hot guy or keep the creep away from you.

5. Crap. You left your car keys in your house, and you’ve (somehow) locked yourself out. Which of your characters picks the lock for you?

Wren. Or Faelyn, but I’m trying to use different characters for each question. Wren could pick a lock…or break the door down pretty easily. Either way works for me.

6. The zombie apocalypse is happening right now. (It sucks.) Everyone is fleeing the planet, and moving to Mars. ONE of your characters can go with you. Who do you choose?

Braston. I know I’m not supposed to have favorites, since all of these characters came from my head…but Braston is ❤

7. You’ve been given the opportunity to travel to one place (town, building, landmark, country) in your book. Where do you go?

Alter Reach Inn.

8. Crazy acid rain is falling from the sky. Which of your characters would you use as an umbrella?

Triston. Easy. I can’t really tell you all that much about him without spoiling, but I think you will agree.

9. You’re out at a restaurant with your main character, and the time has come to order dessert. What do you order for them?

Cheesecake.

That is the end of the questions! I hope you enjoyed this. A little bit of insight on some of the characters I’ve spent over a year with. If anyone does this tag, please let me know! I’d love to read/watch your responses. I hope you enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Until next time –

Jessica
